Dead Battery Care - How to Jump Start Your Car Safely
Precautions and Safety on Jump Starts
Your car battery tends to be an afterthought when it comes to auto care and maintenance. When it comes to our cars, we tend to worry about things like engine problems, broken belts or hoses, and worn or flat tires. You don't expect something like a dead battery to stall your car.
It is one of the simplest parts of your car. It is just one piece and it either works, or it doesn't. You can't repair a battery if it doesn't work. You can always buy a new battery that will last you a long time, or you can jump start your battery. That is what people usually resort to. But for some people the very idea of a jump start is alien to them. Many people are not familiar with cars or how they work.
A dead battery is nothing to panic about. As opposed to other automotive problems that can happen to you while you're driving on the road, a dead battery usually happens after your car has been already parked or unused. So, chances are you might already be in a safe place to have your battery jumped or your car towed, if need be. Most times, dead batteries are products of your car not being used for a few days, or even a week or two. Sometimes it is just an old battery that has nothing in it to give anymore. So you might be back from that vacation you had planned to take all year, or just stepped into the department store for a half hour and found that your car is not starting.
All you need is the proper equipment and a few very basic tips on jump starting your battery to get you back on the road. It is the purpose of this article to educate the driving public on the more common task of battery boosting and the safety precautions one should take while doing it to make sure they don't get injured.
Preparing to Jump Start your Dead Battery
Before you start to even think of jump starting your battery, there are a few things you need to take into consideration. After you have done so, follow these guidelines:
Always make sure your battery is dead. Check the headlights to see if it's really the battery. See if they're working or are not that strong. If they're not strong, you probably have a dead battery. It's important to be one hundred percent sure because boosting a battery that doesn't need a boost can potentially damage the battery.
Keep a set of jumper cables close by in the event that you will have to use them when you get stuck. You never know when you might need them, and they're not that easy to come by once you're stuck on the road.
If you're stuck, you should wait for emergency personnel to come by and help you. But most of the time the people that will come and help you are everyday drivers. Once you find someone to give you a boost, have them park next to your car, or if possible, in front of your car.
Open both hoods of both cars and locate the batteries. If you are unsure, consult the owner's manual. You might get confused by assuming it is under the hood, because in some cars it is located in a different spot amidst the engine, or even in the trunk.
Before you start connecting jumper cables, make sure there are no leaks. Hydrogen gas can be emitted as a battery starts to lose its fluid and this can become very dangerous. It is flammable and that can cause fires, or even an explosion. If there are leaks or other visible damage to the battery, DO NOT JUMP START IT! Call a Los Angeles towing service and take it to your mechanic to have it replaced.
Also, before giving your battery a jump start, make sure no part of either vehicle is in contact.
To be safe, make sure you have a pair of gloves and a blanket to make sure if anything does happen to set off the battery you are able to put it out and stay safe.
Once you have evaluated the situation of your dead battery, bring out the jumper cables. Make sure they are not tangled and once either end is attached to a car, make sure that the clasps don't touch each other.
Before you secure the jumper cables, make sure that both cars are turned off.
Next, place the jumper cables on the battery terminals that share their colors. Always place the red clasp on the positive, and the black clasps on the negative. Never cross the jumper cables to the opposite terminal.
Now that you have both sides of the jumper cable connected to both cars, start the working car. To charge the battery, let the working car rev the engine for a minute or two.
Always make sure that in order to get the proper juice to power the dead battery, check that the clasps are placed properly and securely.
Turn on the car with the dead battery. Make sure that it turns on smoothly. If not, leave the jumper cables on a while longer.
After the car starts working again, take the jumper cables off; each color respectively. Make sure that the caps that protect the terminals are placed back on to secure the battery from damage.
The last thing you need to do is keep the car running for a few minutes and drive it around the block to make sure the car is getting the power it needs and that the battery can work on its own after you turn the car off. If you can't turn the car on after that, the issue could be with an alternator or the battery may just be too old to use any longer.
Your battery should be running well after following these steps. In some cases you might have a jump starter unit that can boost the battery without using another car. If so, follow the steps concerning the placing of the clasps on the terminals and charge as necessary. A jump starter pack should come with an instruction manual to illustrate how it should be used.
Make sure to follow these tips and you'll be fine. If there is something you are not sure of or if there is something that does not look right to you, you are better off waiting for emergency personnel like the Highway Patrol, or call a roadside assistance provider. A quick search of google or yahoo reveals countless Los Angeles Towing Companies that can boost your dead battery or tow your car.
Your painting art journal is a powerful way to jump-start your future painting projects. Consider the following tips to get started.
1. Obtain an 8 1/2 x 11 size hard cover sketchbook. Of course, you could make your own journal, but that is for another discussion. Why keep a journal? It is important to maintain a journal to record important ideas that you receive. If not those great ideas will fly out of your mind as quickly as you receive them. Therefore, Keep your journal with you at all times.
2. Use zip lock or similar pint sized storage bags.
These bags will contain small clip files. Keep images in these bags that can be drawn on for inspiration and included in your painting. Also, keep a sharpie pen to write on the zip lock bag to record its contents.
Get a glue stick to paste some of these image ideas into your journal with notes stating the possible uses of the images. Try recording your notes with color. This will give you a good visual record of the direction that you planning to go in.
3. Write your thoughts about your painting ideas into your journal.
Your thoughts are in addition to the notes you have recorded in step 2. They should be images that inspire your creativity.
When possible include the time, date and place where you obtained your inspiration. The recording of the TIME may help you in understanding what time of day, or month you tend to be more creative.
When you record the location where you got these gems of insight it will encourage you to re-visit that special place.
This will allow you to capitalize on you peak creative times. And the surroundings that inspire your spirit.
4. Use color swatches for ideas and paste into your journal.
Look for color samples from magazines clippings that can be inspiring in your color choices. This can help in the overall color feel of your painting series. They may have an earthly color feel, a warm color sense or cool colors made up of blues and greens.
This is also the time to play around with different color combinations. These color swatches can be pasted into your sketchbook with your glue stick.
5. Paste photos inside your journal and maintain records.
A photographer's best friends are the records that are kept for future reference. These records include:
o Camera and lens combinations used, what digital settings were used or film type.
o Time of day that light in a scene was observed. Some great light is seen early dawn or near sunset. It is usually during this time that you can get nice color changes and light angles.
o Seasonal changes. This will enable you to know where and when to go to get that breathtaking photo.
For example, once a year there is a park in my area that has Cherry Blossoms. If I capture a picture there and decide to paint it in the future I need to record the season and place of those beautiful flowers.
6. Draw, Draw, Draw.
Drawing is fundamental. Drawing is the key foundation to all art forms. With the use of note taking in your journal you can record studies for future artwork.
I like to do thumbnail sketches first. These are small quick drawings that record the sense of composition before a more careful worked out drawing is done. Sometimes in the thumbnail stage I will record notes that will be helpful in my later work. The incubation stage for a series of paintings can be born in your journal.
7. Carve out a time and place each day to visit your journal.
Sure there may be days you just do not post to the journal. But if you aim to do it daily then you will miss not doing it. As a result you will go to your journal the next day or two that week.
When you start an art journal it will launch you into a consistent painting production mode that will fire up your creative juices.
Keep it going and keep producing those painting gems.

By increasing the intensity of your workout you can crank up your fat loss and exercise in a shorter time period. That's a win-win. That means less time in the gym and better results.
For starters stop using slow cardio. If you want to lose weight fast try interval training. A great beginner interval training workout would be 30 seconds of intense running, jumping jacks, or marches followed by a 30 second rest. Do this for 4 times and gradually add in more intervals as you master the level and keep your intensity high.
Another way we can increase intensity is in our strength training. Let's say you do 4 sets of push-ups, 4 sets of squats, and 4 sets of crunches for your Monday strength training day. In order to increase intensity super set the 3 different exercises together so you go from one to the next without rest. After you do all three exercises rest. You can even decrease your rest period to increase intensity further.
Another great exercise routine you can do at home would be a circuit. For a basic circuit do 6 exercises one after the other followed by a 30 second rest period. Perform each exercise for a specific time period like 30 or 45 seconds or you can perform each exercise for a specific number of repetitions.
Any arowana owner that started the hobby off by getting a small tank is going to run into the situation where a bigger tank is needed. If you are just shifting a single arowana, you are pretty safe in doing it yourself. However, if you have a community tank, then more arowana care is needed and it is advised that you seek professional help.
The items you are going to need for the proper arowana care when you are doing the transfer are a styrofoam box (big enough for your arowana, of course), some stabilizer and a large plastic bag. Stabilizers help to calm your Arowana down during the shift by bringing it into a slightly dazed state so it does not struggle as much.
Now that you have all these prepared, remove some water from your original arowana tank to prevent your fish from jumping out if it gets nervous. Following the guide on your stabilizer use and drop the appropriate amount into the tank.
The next step would be to open up the plastic bag and let your fish swim into it naturally. Trying to force it into the bag is never a good idea because it will start to struggle and may either jump out or hurt itself. Once your arowana is in the plastic bag, add in a few drops of stabilizer into the plastic bag and rest it in a safe location.
By this time, you should have had your new arowana tank prepared and filled with properly conditioned water. Do one last quick check to make sure that everything is in place before you put your fish back in. Lastly, go ahead and slowly introduce your arowana into its new home. Start by soaking the plastic bag into your new tank for at least half an hour. This is to get your fish used to the temperature of the water. Then, pour some of the newly cycled water from your new arowana tank into the plastic bag to slowly acclimatize your arowana. You can then finally release the fish into your new arowana tank. Also apply the proper arowana care techniques for a safe transfer of your fish.

The Tiger Shovelnose Catfish or Pseudoplatystoma Fasciatum originates from the Amazons where it lives in flooded forest areas and also from the Essequibo, La Plata, Corintijns, Essequibo, Orinoco and Paraná River basins. During the day it normally hides underneath logs or stones, preferring to venture out for its food at night, where it will scout around near the bed looking for smaller fish and crustaceans. It is now found in many places around the world where it has been introduced over the years. There are several parts of South Africa for example where they are quite popular. Tiger Shovelnose Catfish breed in January. One female fish can produce several million eggs which become fertile as released into the water. In the early stages of its life, the Tiger Shovelnose Catfish will stay hidden in-between roots to avoid being eaten by predators.
The name Pseudoplatystoma Fasciatum is constructed from - Pseudos = fallacy; platys = broad; stoma = mouth; Fasciatum: Banded. They have a distinctive bronze/brown pattern of blotchy marks and bold stripes along their flanks. Although it isn't until they reach a length of around 15cm (6 inches) that this design begins to form. The Tiger Shovelnose Catfish can grow to a length of 1.2m (4ft), although some people claim to have seen them being up to twice that size. When kept in an aquarium though, it is unusual for them to grow any larger than 1m (3.3ft) in length. Their eyes are small but, as is common to the catfish family, the Tiger Shovelnose Catfish have barbels and sensitive whiskers surrounding their mouths. This enables them to detect prey in murky waters or darkness.
It is not advisable to considering getting a Tiger Shovelnose Catfish unless you have had a lot of experience of keeping fresh water fish. You will need a large aquarium. It will have to be 1000ltr (200 gallon) as they will grow to be large fish. It is quite normal for a fish that is only one year old to measure in the region of 40cm (1.3ft). If you reduce the amount of food that you give them then you might be able to slow their growth but remember that these fish will still become very large! As for food, the fish like earthworms, scraps of meat, tablets and other fish that are smaller (bear this in mind and stick to companion fish that are not much smaller.) Do not give them feeder fish as a main food but they will benefit from the occasional one.
You should have some large areas for your fish to have plenty of room to swim. These fish have been known to jump out or to even have broken the glass when they are too cramped. Don't bother with any small plants as they will more than likely end up getting buried or pulled out, you will need larger ones with good, strong roots. For a natural environment you should introduce some wood or rock, creating hiding places. It is advisable to use fine sand and not gravel as the fish may eat it whilst foraging and not pass it through its digestive system. You need to maintain a water temperature of 22-26c (72-79f). Ideally, water hardness should be 4-30dH. The pH level should be 6-7.5. Make sure you have good filtration as these fish are affected by poor water quality. With these conditions your catfish should be quite happy. It is advisable to make water changes twice each week. Do not keep them with other fish of a nervous disposition as they are naturally jumpy.
There is no known way to breed a Tiger Shovelnose Catfish and breeding them is very difficult as they need so much space. Some people believe that breeding may be possible in a pond and that muddy water is beneficial, although this is not definite.

The Wagan Power Dome EX also offers maximum convenience. Are you going camping or plan on being in an area without electrical outlets nearby? No problem. The Power Dome EX has two, three pronged AC outlets providing up to 400 watts, with 800 watt peak surge power of 110 volt house current. It also has one DC outlet to power 12 volt appliances away from your vehicle. Sample appliances serviceable include: laptops, power tools, video games, TVs, cell phones, MP3 players, digital cameras, etc. Plus the powerful 260 PSI air compressor also inflates sports balls (needles included), rafts, air mattresses, etc., while inflating 16" tires in only 5-10 minutes. Another useful feature is the AM/FM radio with antenna. Stay informed by listening to the latest news and weather updates during a blackout or emergency. In addition, the Power Dome EX also has a built-in USB power port to charge your MP3 player, digital camera or cell phone. It even allows for use of its audio input socket to listen to your MP3 or CD player. Easy to Charge and Maintain
The Power Dome EX contains a rechargeable 18Ah sealed lead acid battery. AC and DC adapters are included for recharging at home or in your vehicle while you drive. After the initial charge, it's recommend that you charge the unit for around 34 hours every 2 to 3 months, or more often if the product has been used frequently. Press the battery status indicator to view how charged the item is on the volt meter readout.
